by Faith Teel This is probably one of the coolest project we've ever done: three "Tiffany blue" bookcases... ...the longest of which has a secret door in the middle panel! If you got our Christmas email, you've seen this drawing before. Yes, we drew the design months and months ago, but our calendar was surprisingly full this winter, so we started actually building this project just a few weeks before the quarantine went into effect. It's sitting in our workshop right now, all ready to be installed, and I am really looking forward to seeing it in place. What we didn't show you at Christmas is how the door works. Let's see if I can get this animation to load for you... this might load slowly... If you're like me and you geek out over cool things like this, head over to our Instagram page... we published a funny little "trailer" there featuring a mouse detective and some very mysterious music. Below is our drawing from another angle that might make more sense. Notice the trim at the top. This will be installed in a 100-year-old home, so I designed these bookcases to be a little more fancy than the current trend of simple Shaker trim. I just love this dentil molding! Even though these drawings are perfectly to scale, you don't really get a sense of their enormous size until you see Arthur wrestling with the bookcase-door. That thing was awkward to unpack, especially with Silver the Shopdog getting underfoot. I like to joke that he's a new breed of dog: the Appalachian Attention Hound. He can sing and dance, too. We should have named him Elvis. Moving along... let's take a moment to admire that trim again. That blue in the lower right corner of the picture is pretty close to the color we're painting it. It's incredible when you see all of the bookcases together. It reminds me of those big sugar eggs people used to make for Easter, the ones with the little dioramas inside. We tried the door out and it works like a charm. You just push a little on it and it clicks open smoothly. Here's a pic of me testing it out. This isn't the only project we've got waiting for install. Our shop is just crammed full of cabinets right now. I don't know about you, but I can't wait to get back to normal life. Cabinet installs are a lot of work, and I never thought I would miss doing them. But I do.
But we feel lucky to still have our awesome customers calling us for work, when so many people are struggling. Hopefully soon we'll all get the green light to get out again and go back to the way things used to be. By the way, we're still accepting work. Obviously we can't do site visits yet, but can draw the design now using your measurements and photos, then add you to the schedule for this summer. Actually, our calendar is still pretty full, so it might be early fall before we can build. If you've been thinking about working with us, please please please don't procrastinate. We're not even into the busy season and our books are filling up fast.
