A custom modern entertainment center (with a fireplace!) in Asheville, NC
We recently finished installing a custom modern entertainment center for a downtown Asheville condo, and it has all of the bells and whistles... including a streamlined electric fireplace!
It all started when our clients bought a new condo in the coveted development at 55 South Market Street. These units are located just a block or two from the best shops and restaurants in town, so they are designed to function as a pied à terre with modest square footage. They have fairly small living rooms... and our customers soon found that their beloved leather sofa took up a lot of visual space.

They have fairly small living rooms... and our customers soon found that their beloved leather sofa took up a lot of visual space.
They asked us to design a custom entertainment center which would balance the sofa while housing their 55-inch flat screen, their AV equipment and (since Asheville winters can be chilly) a cozy electric fireplace.
The modern style of the cabinet matches the simple architecture of the room and coordinates well with the Shaker-style trim around the balcony door. The customers asked us to integrate the fireplace with the lower cabinets instead of creating a traditional mantel, and this kept the whole piece looking simple and uncluttered.
When we drew the design, we made sure to include models of the sofa and coffee table so that we could see how all of the pieces would look together. Even though the cabinet would be nine feet long, it worked well in the space because it was relatively shallow and well-balanced by the door and large sofa.

You can get a better idea of the cabinet size with this in-process photo from our studio. The cabinet really takes up much of our staging wall and reaches nearly to the ceiling.
Notice that the electric fireplace is already placed in the cabinet. This is to ensure that everything fits together well.
Speaking of fireplaces, these electric ones are surprisingly lifelike. The trick seems to be turn them down to a low setting to get a "smoldering coal" look.

A simple TV unit like this is a blank canvas that lets you express your personality with the items you display... kind of like a rotating art gallery.
Our custom modern entertainment center turned out to be the perfect finishing touch in this Asheville condo... perfect for those chilly mountain evenings when you want to stay home and watch TV by the fire.
